A weak chin can often make the profile look imbalanced or disproportional. It can even make you look heavier than you really are. For men and women alike, a defined and balanced jawline can create harmony and flattering contours in the face. One effective way to achieve this with long-term results is through chin augmentation, or mentoplasty.
Chin augmentation uses surgical implants to balance your facial features, which may involve improving the size of a small chin or balancing the symmetry of an uneven chin. This procedure is often performed with other procedures, such as a rhinoplasty, to balance the proportions of the face and improve your profile. There are a few different ways that chin augmentation can be achieved, so Dr. DiFrancesco will discuss your options during a consultation.
Patients who benefit most from chin augmentation are those who feel that their profile is imbalanced because of a weak chin. Chin augmentation cannot correct an under- or overbite, which may require a different kind of surgery. Often, candidates for rhinoplasty can benefit from chin augmentation at the same time, and vice versa. It’s important to be in good overall health and able to undergo surgery when considering your options. In some cases, dermal fillers can be used to effectively augment the chin, and Dr. DiFrancesco can recommend your best options.

Chin augmentation is most often performed using silicone implants. Dr. DiFrancesco will help you select the right one during your consultation so that it will fit your goals and existing profile. During the procedure, an incision is made inside the mouth so that any scarring is completely concealable. This is performed under local anesthesia and sedation at our Atlanta office, after which you can return home. If you opt for rhinoplasty at the same time as chin augmentation, Dr. DiFrancesco will make sure you understand the surgical plan which might include the use of general anesthesia.
Recovery from chin augmentation requires only a day or two of downtime, although this can be longer if you opt for additional procedures. You may experience some swelling and discomfort during this time, but these can be managed with prescribed medications. You can expect to recover fully within several weeks, but should avoid heavy activity or putting pressure on the implant until otherwise cleared by Dr. DiFrancesco.
