How to Choose: Botox or a Facelift

When you start seeing signs of aging on your face, there are a wide variety of procedures and treatments that can combat wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Two of the most popular are Botox and facelifts. While these are very different, if you’re unfamiliar with cosmetic procedures it can be confusing to understand which is better suited to your needs.

How to Choose Botox

Botox is the most popular injectable treatment on the market. It works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles responsible for the wrinkles that can form and deepen while you make facial expressions. Generally, Botox would be chosen to smooth out lines across the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around your eyes.

Botox is not as long-lasting as the results from a facelift. The body naturally metabolizes the product over time, and after a few months the muscles are once again able to move freely. As Botox is only temporary, it can be a good treatment to start with if you’re hesitant about making a more permanent change. While Botox treatments can be repeated to maintain the results, some patients prefer to have a single procedure that offers longer-lasting results.

Downtime following a Botox treatment is extremely minimal. Most patients experience some redness and swelling but can resume their normal routines as soon as their appointment is complete. This makes Botox a better treatment for those who can’t afford, or simply don’t want, to take time away from their regular routines due to a long recovery period.

While Botox is very effective in treating wrinkles, it is not suitable for loose or sagging skin.

How to Choose a Facelift

Facelifts are surgical procedures created for those with more significant wrinkles and sagging skin. It is particularly beneficial for those with loose skin in the midface, particularly the jowl area. The results from facelifts are much more long-lasting than less invasive treatments. Typically, a facelift’s results will last for about ten years. After this point, normal signs of aging will start to show again. It would be possible at that time to consider another facelift if you so choose.

Facelifts are not the ideal procedure for those who do not want to undergo surgery, don’t have time for a lengthier recovery period, or have less severe wrinkles. If loose and sagging skin are not a problem for you, a less invasive option may be a better choice. An injectable or nonsurgical treatment is preferred by patients who are seeking more minimal, subtle changes or who are looking for something less permanent. A facelift is the better option for patients who already have more significant wrinkles and loose skin, or who do not want to keep up with maintenance.
