We communicate with our facial expressions just as much as we do with words. Unfortunately, as aging sets in, the upper face can begin sending the wrong signals. Lines and folds in the brow, as well as sagging over the eyes, can cause you to look tired or angry, even if you don’t feel like it. Although Botox® can do a lot, surgical procedures can sometimes produce even more transformative, rejuvenating results.
What is a Brow Lift?
A brow lift, or forehead lift, is a facial plastic surgery procedure that focuses on the brow and upper face. Generally, it can address sagging and drooping in the brow that contributes to the appearance of lines and folds like frown lines, “11s”, and hooded eyelids. During a brow lift, incisions are created to access the underlying tissues for repositioning and rejuvenation. Once lifted into a more youthful position, any excess skin can be trimmed away for a tighter, smoother brow.
Brow Lift Benefits
The biggest benefit of surgical forehead rejuvenation is the reduction in wrinkles and fine lines that can form with aging. These concerns can make you look more angry or tired than you really feel. If you’ve tried Botox but no longer see the results you want, then a brow lift can likely help. The facelift, another facial rejuvenation procedure, doesn’t touch the upper part of the face, meaning if you have sagging brows, a brow lift is a valuable addition. A lifted brow can open up your eyes and lift drooping eyebrows, creating an overall more youthful appearance.

Good Candidates for Brow Lift
Patients who benefit most from a brow lift are those who want long-term results with a smooth and rejuvenated upper face. It’s important that you be in good overall health and able to undergo surgery, so Dr. DiFrancesco will discuss your health history during your consultation. There is no ideal age at which to opt for a brow lift, but most brow lift patients have tried non-surgical treatments like Botox without achieving their ideal results.
Types of Brow Lift
The brow lift can be performed with a few different techniques. Dr. DiFrancesco can decide which will be best for you based on your goals and anatomy.
Open Brow Lift
This technique, also called the coronal brow lift, uses a long incision across the forehead within the hairline. It can address concerns in both the central forehead and the lateral forehead.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
This technique uses small incisions hidden within the scalp to address concerns in the central and lateral forehead. The advantage of this technique is that it uses an endoscope, or small video camera, which allows for much smaller incisions than the traditional open browlift.
Limited Incision Brow Lift
This technique, sometimes called the temporal brow lift, corrects sagging skin and fat in the lateral brow through a small incision hidden within the temporal hair. It’s often performed at the same time as an upper eyelid lift to contour the brow and upper eyelid.
Preparing for Brow Lift
Dr. DiFrancesco will meet with you to go over the preparatory instructions for your brow lift surgery. You’ll be asked to stop smoking and drinking, as well as avoid blood-thinning medications. The brow lift uses general anesthesia, meaning avoiding eating and drinking the night before is essential. Make sure to fill your prescribed medications ahead of time and ensure you have extra pillows for your recovery. Finally, arrange for transportation to and from your surgery, since you won’t be able to drive yourself.
Brow Lift Procedure
The brow lift is often performed under general anesthesia. Dr. DiFrancesco performs the appropriate incision, after which the tissues can be repositioned and tightened using surgical tools and techniques. Then, the skin is tightened, and any excess is trimmed away. Once the incisions are closed and you undergo a brief monitoring period, you can return home with the help of a friend or family member.
Brow Lift Recovery
You can expect to take one week or so away from work and social engagements while you recover from your brow lift. You’ll experience some swelling and bruising, as well as discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications. It’s important to follow Dr. DiFrancesco’s aftercare instructions, which often include avoiding exercise and keeping your head elevated while you sleep. Your results will emerge over the following weeks and months, and we’ll discuss your options for maintaining your results with the right skincare products and professional treatments.
Results of Brow Lift
The results of your brow lift will be visible instantly. You’ll see smoother, younger skin in your upper face with a more lifted and awake look. The effect can be significant, especially if you have a low or sagging brow. With good anti-aging habits like professional-grade skincare, your brow lift results can last for several years.
Risks of Brow Lift
The brow lift comes with risks like any other surgery. Dr. DiFrancesco will review them in detail as well as discuss how she can mitigate them during and after surgery. More common risks and side effects of the brow lift include bleeding, infection, swelling, bruising, and loss of sensation. These issues often subside with time.
Brow Lift Combination Procedures
The brow lift can easily be combined with other procedures to great effect. Dr. DiFrancesco will recommend whether you can benefit from adding other facial procedures to your surgical package.
Facelift
The facelift is the gold standard in facial rejuvenation, but it typically only concerns the mid and lower face. Adding a brow lift can ensure a more comprehensive result, lifting the upper face and smoothing wrinkles.
Eyelid Lift
Sagging brows are often only partly to blame for tired-looking eyes. If your upper lids sag and even obscure your vision, a brow lift and eyelid lift combination can be a powerful option. Together, these options can rejuvenate your eyes and brows for a more alert, awake look.
Injectables
Injectables like Botox are a valuable way to maintain your brow lift results. When used preventively, Botox can extend your brow lift results and lengthen the time before you begin to notice fine lines and wrinkles again.
Cost of Brow Lift
The cost of your brow lift surgery will depend on factors like surgical fees, anesthesia, facilities, and more. Dr. DiFrancesco will give you a detailed cost estimate during your consultation and discuss our financing options.
What to Expect From a Brow Lift Consultation
During a consultation with Dr. DiFrancesco, you’ll spend significant time discussing your concerns and your goals for surgery. She’ll explain the different brow lift techniques available and which ones fit your needs. She’ll also discuss the risks of cosmetic surgery to help you make a fully informed decision.
